How ship gifting works

Every trade outside the RSI store ultimately moves through one official mechanism: the gift. Understanding how it works is the difference between a smooth purchase and a scam.

The official gift system

RSI lets a pledge owner send a giftable item to any e-mail address. The recipient gets a link, clicks accept, and the pledge moves into their account — ships, CCUs, packages, paints. That is the entire delivery mechanism of the secondary market: no account sharing, no credentials, just an official gift to your RSI account e-mail.

The golden rule: a pledge can only be gifted once. After it has been received, it can never be gifted again. That is why "giftable" matters so much in listings — and why StarPlace only allows giftable items to be sold.

Why people buy from other players

Buying from other players gets you discontinued ships, limited CCUs and prices below the store — that is why the market exists. What you do need to watch for is scams: they are real on every marketplace, and that is exactly what escrow answers. On StarPlace the buyer's money is held by PayPal until the gift is delivered and confirmed, so a seller who never delivers never gets paid.

Where people get burned

The classic scams are painfully simple: a "seller" who takes payment and disappears; a "buyer" who receives the gift and charges the payment back; a fake middleman who was never going to forward anything. All of them share one root cause — someone handed over money or goods with nothing holding the other side accountable.

How escrow closes the gap

On StarPlace the order of operations protects both sides: the buyer pays first, but the money is held in escrow — the seller never sees it yet. The seller then sends the official RSI gift to the buyer's account e-mail. Only after the buyer confirms the item arrived does the payment release to the seller. No confirmation, no payout — and disputes are reviewed by a human.

Buyer's checklist

Use the exact e-mail of your RSI account at checkout — the gift goes there and nowhere else. Keep the conversation and the payment on the platform. Confirm receipt only after the item is actually in your hangar. And if a deal looks too good to be true, it usually is.
